Chow Down On Baked Green Goodies For St. Patrick’s Day In NYC

From the lights on top of the Empire State Building to the parade that marches down 5th Avenue every year, St. Patrick’s Day in NYC is a massive celebration of Irish Pride – whether you actually descend from The Emerald Isle or just enjoy bagpipes and beer.

Though largely known as a drinking holiday, it’s also a day that’s branded by all things green. And while every pub and tavern in town is sure to be offering specials on classic Irish dishes like corned beef and cabbage and shepherd’s pie, the city’s bakers will be busy turning out St. Paddy’s Day spirit in the form of green food coloring and shamrock-shaped sprinkles.

Green is not everyone’s color, but it does happen to look especially good on bagels, in mounds of frosting on top of cupcakes, glazed over cookies and swirled into cheesecakes. Here’s where to find a few of the most sought-after green baked goods in the city. Because everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day in NYC and that’s a perfectly good excuse for eating all the green-colored goodies you desire.

The Bagel Store

718-218-7220

Best-known for his mesmerizing and ultra-Instragrammable rainbow bagels, The Bagel Store owner and “World’s Premier Bagel Artist” Scot Rosillo, is crafting green, orange and white bagels (pictured above) for St. Patrick’s Day. These clearly aren’t your average green bagels. Like Rosillo put it, “Everyone makes green bagels, I make art.”

Something sweet and eye-catching is always in store at this Tribeca bakery where pastry chef Madeline Lanciani creates cakes, pastries and other edible works of art from-scratch on premises. Seasonal treats include these impressive St. Patrick’s Day sable sugar cookie “postcards,” which feature vintage Irish images. Duane Park also specializes in petits fours for all occasions: for St. Paddy’s Day, the bite-sized cakes come adorned with green and golden shamrocks and come in gift boxes, spelling out messages like “Good Luck” and “Luck O’ The Irish.”

Brilliant green and filled with Irish whiskey chocolate ganache, the heart-shaped macaron “petals” are arranged to make up a four leaf clover. They are $14.50 for the set and will be available starting today, March 11, at Dominique Ansel Bakery and the new West Village Shop, Dominique Ansel Kitchen, which opened last spring.
